Tutorial : RT17 How to get a searchfield on the Homepage : Searchbar
  • Hello,

    I've just purchased your #17 as my second "RT" theme (already using #15). First, let me say that your themes are the best... and this new one is exceptional! I especially love all the customizing options and your documentation is very clear and easy to follow.

    There are 2 things I am attempting, however, and cannot accomplish on the homepage. Note that I am using the left sidebar option. Here's a link to my work in progress:

    http://zgdesigns.net/slipstop/

    1. On sub-pages of the site, I can easily add a text line below the navigation in the header bar. But I can't find a way to add the same line on my homepage. Can you give me instructions to do this?

    2. Also on the search pages, I've checked to add a search box, which shows up within the breadcrumb area. Can I add a similar search somewhere on the homepage? Possibly just above the content on the right? (I don't like the style that shows up as a basic search widget when I've added it in the left navigation).

    Thanks for your help - keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing any new themes you develop!
  • Hi,

    1) create a page called home. And set the page to be your home page in the wp reading settings. now you will have the ability for the text line like other pages.

    2) You can add a searchbox widget anywhere on the home page. Or if you know html put it in the textbox below the menu on the right.

  • Hi

    If you create a static home page put this in the custom header box.

    <div style="z-index:9999;margin-top:40px;"><div class="search-bar">
    <form class="showtextback" method="get" action="http://yourwebsite.com// ">
    <fieldset>
    <input class="searchsubmit" type="image" alt="Search" src="http://yourwebsite.com/wp-content/themes/rttheme17/images/pixel.gif ">
    <input id="s" class="search_text showtextback" type="text" value="Search" name="s">
    </fieldset>
    </form>
    </div></div>

    remove the space at // " and at gif "

    replace the text yourwebsite.com with your own url to your website. Now you will have a searchbox on the home page.

    replace the "Search" with the text of your own language

    If you dont see the box because of a white background....

    <div style="z-index:9999;margin-top:40px;"><div class="search-bar" style="border:1px solid #303030 !important;">
    <form class="showtextback" method="get" action="http://yourwebsite.com// ">
    <fieldset>
    <input class="searchsubmit" type="image" alt="Search" src="http://yourwebsite.com/wp-content/themes/rttheme17/images/pixel.gif ">
    <input id="s" class="search_text showtextback" type="text" value="Search" name="s">
    </fieldset>
    </form>
    </div></div>

    or add this to the custom css field of the theme styling options. or use both... whatever you like.

    .home .search-bar form input {
    background: url("../images/transparent-white.png") repeat scroll 0 0 #D0D0D0;
    color:#303030 !important;
    }

    THE RESULT

    remove the space at the end of (before the ")

    yourwebsite.com// " and at pixel.gif "

  • Thanks so much, this works great!!

    Only (minor) problem I see is now on the search results page. The style of navigation links is different than on other pages, not sure why. We have quite a few top nav selections, and the list becomes too wide to fit with this different font/more padding here. If it's helpful to see what I'm talking about, here's the site again:

    www.zgdesigns.net/slipstop

    No real content yet, but you'll still see the problem if you search.

    Can you just tell me how to apply the same style as appears on other pages?

    Thanks!
  • Hi

    You did not like i said apply the code to a static home page you mage it global. That was not the questions initially and not the solution i gave you.

    If you need any help on this can you grant me access to the admin part of your website?

    Just send me a private email with the login details to the admin.

    Click on my name and then on the left you can send me a private email.

    Please also include a link to this thread so i know what the personal mail is about.

  • Hi

    i have read your pm.

    Just alter the div around the search box or use custom css in the theme styling settings custom css box. You can add any style to the div directly by the style attribute.

    do not hardcode any css file in the theme because you will have to redo this on any theme update.

    Do i still have to go in? because i got your second pm indicating that you found your way.

  • Hi

    put this code into a banner box and you will have a great searchbox on the home page in a banner.

    <div class="head_text nomargin" ><div class="arrow"><h3 style="font-size:26px; width:660px;text-align:left; margin-left:30px;">Search</h3></div></div>
    <div class="search-bar" style=" border:1px solid #303030 !important; z-index:99">
    <form action="http://yourwebsite.com// " method="get" class="showtextback">
    <fieldset>
    <input type="image" src="http://yourwebsite.com/wp-content/themes/rttheme17/images/pixel.gif " class="searchsubmit" alt="Search" />
    <input type="text" class="search_text showtextback" name="s" id="s" value="Search" />
    </fieldset>
    </form>
    </div>

    remove the space at the end of (before the ")

    yourwebsite.com// " and at pixel.gif "

    Do i need to mention that you need to replace

    1) the http://yourwebsite.com with the correct url of "Yourwebsite"?
    2) the word "Search" within the text in your own language

    Best regards,
    Neo

  • Hi, I have done the same thing several times and it doesn't work

    I wrote in the custom header box

    <div class="search-bar">
    <form action="http://www.ssi-geotechnics.com// " method="get" class="showtextback">
    <fieldset>
    <input type="image" src="http://www.geotechnics.com/wp-content/themes/rttheme17/images/pixel.gif " class="searchsubmit" alt="Búsqueda" />
    <input type="text" class="search_text showtextback" name="s" id="s" value="Búsqueda" />
    </fieldset>
    </form>
    </div>

    And it doesn't work, please what can I do?

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi

    I tested this with the banner box in the template builder and it does work perfectly in my website.

    i adjusted the code above to get it working in a Free Code Space for Advanced Users

    Because of theme changes that wasn't working anymore.

    Best regards,
    Neo
  • Hi Neo, this isn't related to adding a search form, but rather the text line in the homepage header. I've done as you've said here, but I also included a link button which doesn't seem to be able to be selected/clicked on, like there's another div overlaying it? Could you explain how to fix this?
    Thanks!

  • Hi

    try

    header, #header {
    position: inherit;
    }

    Please put this custom css code into the custom css field of the theme styling options (rt14 - recent) or general settings (rt 9 until rt 13).
